This review reflects on the mission and history of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, highlighting its adherence to spiritual principles and community engagement.
The church's method is rooted in the Great Commission from Matthew 28:18-20, emphasizing the importance of teaching and baptizing all nations. This biblical directive shapes their outreach and educational initiatives.
Furthermore, the church seeks to embody the call from Matthew 5:16 to let their "light shine" in a world that often struggles with darkness. The intent is to inspire good works that bring glory to God.
Friendship Missionary Baptist Church focuses on a tri-fold priority:
- Exalt the Savior: Through vibrant praise and worship, they aim to ensure Christ's supremacy in all aspects of ministry (Colossians 1:18).
- Equip the Saint: With genuine fellowship and solid biblical teaching, the church seeks to prepare its congregation for service (Ephesians 4:12).
- Evangelize the Sinner: The church actively reaches out to those who are lost, fulfilling the call to be witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
The history of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church dates back to its organization in 1948 under Reverend P. R. Dortch. The church initially moved to its current location on 10th Street later that same year and welcomed Reverend E. L. McCann as pastor, during which time a new building was constructed.
In June 1957, Reverend John W. Wright assumed leadership, guiding the church through a period of significant spiritual and numerical growth. Under his stewardship, the church expanded into its current building at 7214 10th Street and developed numerous ministries until his retirement in October 1991 due to health issues.
Reverend John F. Payne, Sr. took over pastoral duties from June 1992 until October 2017. His leadership saw membership grow to over 900, along with enhancements to deacon, trustee, and ministerial ministries. Additionally, he oversaw the establishment of a Child Development Center in March 2007 and the completion of a Family Life Center in 2013.
Following Reverend Payne's tenure, an extensive pastor search culminated in January 2019 with Dr. Corey D. Brown being appointed as pastor, supported by First Lady RaShawn Brown. During Dr. Brown's leadership, membership has grown by over 100 new individuals, alongside the creation of “A New Hope Ministry,” which seeks to further engage and support the community.
